Monthly Update - June 2024

Everything that happened at Mon Studios for the past month

June marked the official public beta launch of Spellborne with Season 1: Higher Stakes. Let's take a look at what our team has accomplished over the past month.

Season 1 Recap

Here's a summary of Spellborne's first two weeks of public access:

5,000,000 battles played since launch

315,000 monsters captured (that's a lot of monsters!)

112,000 users signed up to play Spellborne

But that's not all…

Players are actively engaging with the game daily, with over 11,000 users regularly checking in. Social media activity is growing, with gameplay clips, screenshots, YouTube let's plays, and more.

Development Update

Battle System

Since the basics of the battle system are now fully complete, our development and art teams are focusing on planned improvements. These improvements include:

Improved art for monsters and the turn-based battle scene. Compared to the rest of the game, the battle system still relies on an older art style that wasn't updated due to development deadlines. Currently, our art team is revamping the art for battle system monsters and the entire battle scene.

The design on the left shows the current look of the example monster, while the design on the right shows how it will look after the design revamp is complete.

Our art team's main focus has been to make the art feel consistent with the rest of the game, while also improving monster stances and animations.

Improved attack animations and faster battles. Attack animations primarily rely on the end user's browser and device to work properly. Our team is currently testing the maximum limits we can achieve by enhancing the attack animations and making battles slightly faster.

The current build of the battle system lacks several important features that were planned but haven't been deployed yet. These features include dynamic weather, more diverse move sets with different effects, and more. All of these are currently being worked on and tested internally. We expect these changes to go live in the coming month or two.

Improved NPC AI. Battling the same monsters repeatedly can become monotonous, especially when they're always in defensive mode. Our development team is testing an enhanced NPC AI that will bring more challenging wild battles, NPC battles, and events such as Crux Tower.

Friendly PVP Battles. With the upcoming Nearby Finder feature, players will be able to battle friends on the map with just a click of a button. This feature is currently under development and testing.

Friendly player-vs-player battles will also introduce players to tournaments, complete with ELO rankings, monster stats, and more.

Overworld

The locations and maps for Season 2 have been completed, along with a full revamp of the map for the autumn season. The art team is now working on winter assets for the entire map, covering all locations from Season 1 to Season 3.

Different seasons can unlock new routes or lock existing ones, forcing players to find their way depending on the season.

Once the art team completes the locations for Season 3, Spellborne will feature over 12 locations, including more than 5 towns, 7 routes, and more.

Release

With the public beta release going live this previous month, our team has shifted focus on pushing the ios and android builds out for the game as soon as possible. This would allow players who download the game from Apple App Store and Google Play Store to play with any other player who is playing on browser.
